Winter Melancholy

What To Do With Your Old Laptop?

If you want to get rid of your laptop and unable to find any takers, you can try converting it to a Panel-PC as shown below. You just have place the motherboard between two panels (how abt glass?), screw the monitor to one of the panels and finally solder all the wired connections. If your laptop supports Bluetooth, you just have to pick up a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Find a "Do It Yourself" guide below;

Well I guess I'll have to wait a while, for something in my laptop to go kaput :D

SOA Security Model for Enterprise Application Integration

This is my final presentation (see below) of my project work at a company called Agresso. The project work explores in detail, the security issues in a Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) environment and also describes the various approaches to these issues. The different approaches to SOA security (i.e. message level security, security as a service and policy driven security) are not standalone solutions, but can be deployed as mix and match solutions. Finally the project work describes a generic SOA security model which acts as a reference model to identify security vulnerabilities in enterprise application integration (EAI). These vulnerabilities can then be addressed by the different approaches to security.

Swades

This is a brilliant movie which helps us understand some of the issues and congruities that confront India. It has to be agreed that it's sensibilities lies with that of rural India.

The only drawback is the running time of over 3 hours 20 mins, but it certainly has its moments which are funny and at the same time heartfelt and touching. It is indeed contemporary, cutting across clichés and definitely worthy of a watch.

I love the BGM composed by ARR, especially the ones below and the patriotic song in the finale...simply amazing!

Peopleware

This is considered as one of the best books in software engineering. Peopleware looks at the many facets of human issues in the software development process. It is a book you should read if you desire your business team to reach its full potential regardless of the industry you are in (must read for IT professionals).

The book spends a lot of time focusing on teams, and making you appreciate the value of teams. Another important aspect it teaches is to recognize the value of people in the software development process. A brief summary of this book can be found in the link below;

Quotes From C&H

Attitude -- You know what we need, Hobbes? We need an attitude. Yeah, you can't be cool if you don't have an attitude.
--Calvin

Best Friend -- Things are never quite as scary when you've got a best friend.
--Calvin

Enjoy Where We Are -- Sometimes it seems things go by too quickly. We are so busy watching out for what's just ahead of us that we don't take the time to enjoy where we are.
-- Calvin

HW or Snow -- I should be doing my homework now. But the way I see it, playing in the snow is a lot more important. Out here I'm learning skills that I can apply throughout the rest of my life - procrastinating and rationalizing.
-- Calvin

Job Badly Enough -- If you do a job badly enough, sometimes you don't get asked to do it again.
-- Calvin

Killing Time -- I'm killing time while I wait for life to shower me with meaning and happiness.

-- Calvin

Mind Wander -- I let my mind wander and it didn't come back.
-- Calvin

Never Die -- I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I'm so far behind I will never die.

-- Calvin

Work for Everything -- Why should I have to work for everything? It's like saying that I don't deserve it.
-- Calvin

Writing -- I used to hate writing assignments, but now I enjoy them. I realized that the purpose of writing is to inflate weak ideas, obscure poor reasoning and inhibit clarity. With a little practice, writing can be an intimidating and impenetrable fog!
-- Calvin

Dream -- I think we dream so we don't have to be apart so long. If we're in each others dreams, we can play together all night!
-- Hobbes

Smug -- The real fun of living wisely is that you get to be smug about it.

Greatest Man -- -I've been thinking. Suppose I grow up to be one of the world's greatest men of all time. Suppose my name will be an inspiration to humanity for eons to come.
-- Calvin

Hiccup Cures -- I think most hiccup cures were really invented for the amusement of the patient's friends.
-- Hobbes

Jelly Doughnuts -- Jelly doughnuts gross me out. They're like eating giant, squishy bugs. You bite into them and all their purple guts spill out the other end.
-- Calvin

Dog-Eat-Dog World -- It's a dog-eat-dog world, so I'll do whatever I have to, and let others argue whether it’s "right" or not.
-- Calvin

Jungle out of Tiger -- You can take the tiger out of the jungle, but you can't take the jungle out of the tiger.

-- Calvin

Only Human -- The problem with people is that they are only human.
-- Hobbes

Stupendous Man -- Yes! It's ... Stupendous Man! Friend of freedom! Opponent of oppression! Lover of liberty!
-- Stupendous Man

Rudeness and Disrespect -- A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.
-- Calvin

Green Knees -- I say, if your knees aren't green by the end of the day, you ought to seriously re-examine your life.
-- Calvin

Skills Patient to Learn -- The only skills I have the patience to learn are those that have no real application in life.
-- Calvin

Nothing You Want -- There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want.

Up to Something -- People pay more attention to you when they think you're up to something.

-- Calvin

Girls Go On Living -- It must be awful to be a girl. I'm sure it's frustrating knowing that men are bigger, stronger and better at abstract thought than women. Really, if you are a girl, what would make you go on living?

Bed Poem 1 -- At night my mind does not much care
If what it thinks is here or there.
It tells me stories it invents
And makes up things that don't make sense.
I don't know why it does this stuff.
The real world seems quite weird enough.
-- Calvin

Bed Poem 2 -- Now I'm in bed,
The sheets pulled to my head.
My tiger is here making Zs.
He's furry and hot.
He takes up a lot
Of the bed and he's hogging the breeze.
Behavior is Addictive -- My behavior is addictive functioning in a disease process of toxic co-dependency. I need holistic healing and wellness before I'll accept any responsibility for my actions.

-- Calvin

Ignorance is Bliss -- If ignorance is bliss, this lesson would appear to be a deliberate attempt on your part to deprive me of happiness, the pursuit of which is my unalienable right according to the declaration of independence. I therefore assert my patriotic prerogative not to know this material. I'll be out in the playground.
-- Calvin

Life of Pi

This is an incredible book which is impossible to put down once you get going. As any other great adventure book it goes well beyond the story itself. It has a message which can be understood at different levels by different readers. At times it resembles a fable, at times a hallucination and at times just breezy.

The core part of the book describes Pi's journey across the Pacific Ocean in a lifeboat with an injured Zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a tiger. Eventually their numbers are reduced to two - Pi and the tiger (the rest of the book is a 227 page ordeal for survival). The best part of the book is the choice of an alternate ending, which challenges and leaves you in contemplation.

Life of Pi is a fantasy adventure novel written by Canadian author Yann Martel, which won the prestigious Man Booker Prize for Fiction in September 2001.
